Phillip B Gottfredson
, Author/Historian
Phillip B Gottfredson began researching Black Hawk’s mission of peace and soon uncovered a 150-year-old historical cover-up of genocide no one was supposed to know about. Writing a truthful account of the Utah Black Hawk War and Mormon settler colonialism from Indigenous perspectives was a new and difficult challenge for Phillip, since these voices had been erased from history to hide the facts.
Phillip’s great-grandfather, Peter Gottfredson, was close in age to Black Hawk, and just as his father had told Phillip many years ago, he became friends with Black Hawk during the war. "I had to know what grandpa's experience was like hanging out with the Timpanogos, who were Shoshonee," Phillip wrote. "The urge was so strong I convinced my brother to sell everything we owned, and we moved to Oregon to live with a Shoshone family. Suddenly, my journey went from researching a war to a personal transformation."
"Ten years later, I met the Timpanogos people, the descendants of Black Hawk’s people—Wakara, Arapeen, Tabby, Sanpitch, Grosapeen, Ammon, and Kanosh. I spent eight summers with the Timpanogos, and now I understand why grandpa cared for them so deeply."
"More than twenty years ago, I left behind a life entangled in colonial illusions and entered an ancient culture that taught me to live with honesty and truth. Those years were the best of my life.
I want to show you the immense strength and beauty of the Indigenous worldview, which can endure unimaginable cruelty and still offer peace. This book is written to give you the courage to look truth in the eyes, confront your own illusions, and reclaim the life you were meant for."
